Clean Start Wash
How to clean dreadlocks?

I just recently got dreadlocks and I am wondering when should I start washing them? Also is there a product where i can use as a substitute for keeping them clean until I can wash them?

Wash them whenever you feel like it needs it. There is no formula for when to wash them, I promise. You want to wash dreadlocks less than brushable hair because they are so thick they take longer to dry and bad things happen if you wash them too often and don’t let them dry in the middle. Other than that you’re fine to wash to your hearts content as long as they are getting FULLY dry (even in the middle). That being said, you do need to be very careful when washing new dreadlocks. Just be very gentle, try washing them in a bath–shower pressure can be too much on new dreadlocks sometimes. And of course make sure you’re using a residue free shampoo because you don’t want anything building up in them.

I don’t know of any products for that purpose. I’ve used a spray bottle of water/Tea Tree Oil and water/salt before to freshen them up a bit between washings.

Best of luck. Feel free to use the link in my profile to email me if there’s anything else I can do for you :)
